Heights of hypocrisy, cries Manoj Kumar
Veteran actor Manoj Kumar is shocked and miffed with the recently-revealed government records that do not recognise freedom fighter Bhagat Singh as a martyr.
"This is heights of hypocrisy and double standards. On one hand, you keep his statue in Parliament, and on the other you don’t even give him a martyr’s status?” says the 76-year-old, best known for his patriotic films including Shaheed (1965), where he played the role of Bhagat Singh.
"He was the one who coined the term, Inquilab Zindabad, he went on a 116-day hunger strike for his countrymen, and his birthday on March 23 is celebrated as Martyr’s Day. But look at the irony, he is not a martyr in the eyes of the government!” says Kumar. “However, I’m confident, they’ll have to swallow their words one day,” he adds.
