Inaugurating an additional building of the Gauhati high court, Sathasivam said, “A good judge should be articulate, patient, well read, firm but not draconian, kind but not soft, he must be non-judgmental, open-minded, and he must be the master of his court. Above all, he must be incorruptible.”
The CJI said the 21st century poses several challenges as the law becomes an integral aspect of society and court decisions affect issues that directly matter to the people.
He said that litigation has been on an increase year by year and it can certainly be taken to be an indication of the faith that the people repose in the judiciary. On the cry for a sensitised judiciary, the CJI said the need for sensitising the judiciary is as imperative as the need for an active judiciary. He said it may not be enough if a judge is only energetic and diligent in the performance of duties because sometimes, he has to go beyond being an active judge and has to be an activist judge.
