UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, on Tuesday, launched the food security scheme in the capital by giving smart cards to 12 women beneficiaries at a special function at Talkatora Stadium. Delhi, along with Haryana and Uttarakhand, becomes the first Indian states to give food security to
"With the launch of this scheme the poor have been assured right to food," Gandhi said. "We have made food security a law so that no poor is left hungry, no kid goes to sleep without food and children do not become victims of malnutrition. This scheme is incredible."
Gandhi said she knew there was corruption in public distribution system.
"We know there are issues with public distribution system. That's why we have linked it with the Aadhaar card to make it transparent and successful," Gandhi said.
The scheme ensures that every member of the family gets five kilo food grain (wheat and rice combined) – wheat at Rs.
2/kilo and rice at Rs.
The poorest of the poor families will get the assured supply of 35 kilo foodgrains every month at the same price. The cards have been made in the name of the senior most women in the family.
"We have empowered women through this scheme. They will get respect and position in the society," Gandhi said.
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said 32 lakh people will start getting highly subsidised ration under the food security scheme from September 1.
"We will give food security to 73 lakh people in Delhi. The remaining beneficiaries will be added by December of January," chief minister Sheila Dikshit said.
Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party, Dikshit said she was disappointed that opposition parties were speaking out against a scheme that gives right to food to poor.
"The opposition is not letting the bill pass in the parliament. The Congress is determined that the bill is passed soon," Dikshit said.
Appreciating 15 years of the Congress regime in Delhi, Gandhi said the face of Delhi has completely transformed under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit.
"You can feel the difference yourself. The quality of life has improved. The development in Delhi, especially the metro, has won the heart of the people of Delhi and also who come from outside. The government of Delhi is sensitive to the problems of people. Development in Delhi is incredible," Gandhi said.
