The national and state road safety councils have zeroed in on 973 spots that are prone to accidents in the state.
Former state road safety council member SP Singh says, "The maximum vulnerable spots are in Varanasi (131), followed by Meerut (127 ), Kanpur (121), Agra and Allahabad have
114 each. Lucknow division has 57 such spots.”
Singh says these spots can be made safe with some engineering alterations. At some crossings, changes in design are required. At others, putting in signage about ‘dangerous turn’, ‘school ahead’, 'road construction on’ or ‘one way’ will do.”
At the local level, the district road safety councils must be made functional.
They are lying defunct in several districts, including the state capital.
For the last one year, there has been no meeting of these councils despite Lucknow witnessing 534 deaths in road accidents in 2012, which is the highest among the metros of UP.
Singh says there is a lot of scope for research by the traffic department and civic officials to analyse why maximum deaths are reported in November and December.
The reasons may be fog, or drunken driving as most of the festivals fall during that season.
SK Jain, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation’s traffic expert and incharge of JNNURM, says, "Work at Polytechnic crossing, the roundabout at Bhootnath, Avadh Hospital crossing is on. Polytechnic crossing is being widened along with Lohia Path by PWD. Similarly , there are plans for Avadh Hospital crossing and other places too."
Nevertheless, the rest of the state still has 700 spots where no signage has been put up.
Recently, transport minister Durga Prasad Yadav directed officials to come up with a report to make these vulnerable spots safe.
A PWD official said, "The department is working to make the roads safer. The department is also in touch with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the State Highways Authority to stop highways from turning into killerways."
