A youth allegedly murdered an 8-year-old girl after raping her in Bhubaneswar. Police said they arrested the 20-year-old youth and forwarded him to court on Wednesday. The incident sparked protests with people blocking road demanding strong action against the youth. The youth, a daily wage labourer, stays in the same slum in the state capital as the girl’s family. On Tuesday afternoon, he had kidnapped the girl on the pretext of seeking her help in locating another person’s house.

When the girl did not return home for hours, her parents and other slum dwellers started a search for her.

They nabbed the youth after a close circuit television (CCTV) camera installed at the gate of a private institution showed him taking the girl along with him. Though feigning innocence initially, the youth admitted to have killed her by strangulation following rape after police recovered her body with bloodstains in private parts from a secluded place near the slum.

“Further investigations are on,” Bhubaneswar deputy commissioner of police Nitinjeet Singh said.
