A 36-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of Satguru Partap Singh Apollo Hospital on Sunday morning.
His wife tried to stop him when he tried to break the window of the hospital room. But he assaulted her, pushed her aside and jumped from the window.

The deceased has been identified as Jagtar Singh of Mandi Gobindgarh. He was assisting his elder brother, Harjinder Singh in financing business.

His wife, Gurmeet Kaur, told the police that Jagtar was suffering from depression for the past few months.

He was in the hospital to attend to his father-in-law, who had recently suffered a heart attack and had been undergoing treatment at the hospital. The family had availed of a private room for the patient on the fourth floor.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Pawittar Singh, incharge at Sherpur police post, said Jagtar jumped from the fourth floor around 8.30 am and died on the spot.

She said Jagtar asked her to fetch some water, and when she returned to the room, she was shocked to see him trying to break the window. When she tried to stop him, Jagtar assaulted her and pushed her aside, before jumping off, Gurmeet added.

The ASI said no case had been registered yet, but the police were investigating the matter, and would take appropriate action after probing the matter.
