HT Correspondent
Ludhiana, August 25, 2013
With city registering several cases of dog bites every day, the Ludhiana MC has failed to do anything in this regard and has even failed to finalise the tender.
The tender prepared by the officials of the health and the sanitation wing and MC additional commissioner Sumeet Jarangal, was submitted to the commissioner RK Verma on August 16, after which he suggested some changes in the penalty clause of the tender. After this the tender was supposed to be floated by August 20, but in vain.

An official of the health wing said that the commissioner had asked officials to re-structure the tender on August 16 and finally submit it by August 20. However, the tender is still waiting to get re-structured, as a result of which the stray-dog menace continues unabated.

Amarjit Singh Sekhon, joint commissioner of the MC, said that tender would be submitted soon to the commissioner. In a meeting on August 16, several points were discussed between the officials and Verma, in which the issue of stray-dog menace was raised.

The commissioner is serious in tackling the menace and has been making efforts since long to do away with the problem.

Earlier, the MC had asked NGOs to extend help in sterilising stray dogs, but the civic body was surprised to know that there was no NGO registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India and capable of doing the task.

Now, an agency for sterilisation of stray dogs has to fill the tender, which would be floated following which the process to start sterilisation of stray dogs will begin. As per the guidelines of the state government, the agency would be monitored by a committee which will have two members from the Animal Welfare Board of India.

There have been several cases in the recent past, where people were severely injured by stray dogs especially during evening time.
