UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon on Monday appointed a Pakistani army general as the Military Adviser for United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.

Lt Gen Maqsood Ahmed, who replaces Senegal's Lt Gen Babacar Gaye whose tour of duty ended on July 8, recently completed his duties as a Corps Commander in the Pakistan Army, an appointment that he had held since February 2013.

Ahmed has held a number of senior appointments, including serving as an Infantry Commander.

His military appointments comprised a combination of command and staff appointments and include a United Nations peacekeeping tour of duty in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2005-2006, a UN statement said.
