Lucknow/Ayodhya, August 27, 2013
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Monday ordered freeing VHP leaders Ashok Singhal, Praveen Togadia and Jagadguru Ram Bhadracharya, who had been arrested on Sunday for participating in the banned yatra their organisation was organising.

The bench comprising justice Imtiyaz Murtaza and justice DK Upadhaya passed the orders on a petition filed on their behalf.

The court cited the provision of the law that dealt with cognizable offence (for which arrest can be made without warrant). Petitioners' counsel said they had been detained without assigning any reason, which was in violation of the fundamental rights. Saints of Ayodhya have threatened to launch a jail-bharo stir if sadhus weren't released immediately.

Meanwhile, Ayodhya showed signs of normalcy on Monday. The park in which the VHP had announced plans to hold protests looked deserted as district magistrate VK Dwivedi and senior SP KB Singh ensured it remained out of bounds for the saffron brigade.
