More than a month after notices were served for illegal alterations made in five-star hotel Grand Hyatt at Santacruz, the civic body is set to demolish them on Wednesday. In July, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had issued notices to the hotel for building offices in the basement meant for parking, carrying out unauthorised alterations on three floors, illegal addition of the ninth floor, and failing to hand over 3,000 sq mt reserved plot to the BMC, among others.

The H-East ward office will initiate action tomorrow and demolish the illegal alterations. Police protection for the demolition has also been taken by the ward office. Ajitkumar Ambi, assistant municipal commissioner (H-East ward), said: “We had issued notices under the MRTP Act, after which they assured the changes will be corrected. We will now demolish the alterations under our purview.”

Corporator Brian Miranda, who had brought the issue to the notice of the local ward, said: “The BMC must take back the 3,000 sq mt reserved plot, which is being used as a tennis court. The Vakola area does not have open spaces for residents.”

The hotel executives said these are false allegations. “We had temporary structures in the basement, which have been removed whereas the ninth floor has been built according to the approved plan,” said G Rajaraman, senior vice president, Grand Hyatt. He said the hotel is ready to hand over the reserved plot, but the civic body has not shown any interest.
