Two Panjab University hostellers have been arrested for thrashing a varsity security guard whose only fault was that he insisted on checking the car of the accused on Thursday night. The police said the varsity guard, Ghan Shyam Dutt, who was on duty at gate number 2, was thrashed with hockey sticks when he asked the students to open their car for checking. The police said there were five students in the car. Those arrested have been identified as Ajay Rathi and Kuldeep Kumar, who were later sent in judicial custody. Rathi stays in hostel number-3, while Kuldeep in hostel number-5.

The students were nabbed within half-an-hour of the incident and they were medically examined. They were not found to be drunk. The accused have been booked for causing hurt and criminal intimidation under sections 323 and 506 of the IPC at sector 11 police station. The police said efforts were on to trace other accomplices of the accused.
