Taking a leaf out of political greenhorns Aam Aadmi Party’s process of finalising candidates for the assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party has asked its workers to nominate people for party tickets from their constituencies.
The workers have been asked to name three
candidates each but they cannot nominate themselves or a member of their family. The names would be sent through a secret ballot.
The exercise was carried out in the assembly segments under the south Delhi parliamentary constituency on Monday. After this, BJP members will nominate candidates for the 10 assembly segments under the New Delhi parliamentary constituency.
“It was felt that the grassroots workers were feeling left out from candidate selection process. This exercise is a way by which the workers can have their say in the process. The entire exercise will be carried out through secret ballot,” said a senior BJP leader.
The Aam Aadmi Party has a process in which all ticket-seekers are first shortlisted after they get letters of support from the people living in the constituency they seeking ticket from. A top party panel then decides the party nominee.
Earlier, Delhi elections in-charge Nitin Gadkari had said tickets will not be “sold” at any cost and the winning ability will be the sole criteria for candidate selection.
The entire exercise is expected to be completed by September 5. National executive members representing, state executive members, Delhi BJP office bearers, district teams, current and former ward presidents, serving and former councillors and MLAs have been asked to nominate people for tickets.
The nomination is being done through a form, in which a person can list three crucial issues affecting a particular area.
“The sealed packet containing the names will be sent to Gadkari’s office and a final decision will then be taken,” said another BJP leader. The Delhi BJP had earlier announced it would finalise the first list of candidates for the assembly elections by September 15. On Tuesday, the first meeting of the election core committee will be held to decide the campaign strategy.
