Director Shoojit Sircar is elated with the appreciation his recent film Madras Cafe has got, and is grateful to actor-producer John Abraham for backing the sensitive project. “There is no better reward than an appreciating audience. I was a little apprehensive if youngsters, who have not seen that time (the Sri Lankan civil war and the Rajiv Gandhi assassination), will be able to get the emotional angle of the film, but they have completely surprised me,” he says.

“If I would have gone with this script to anyone else, they would have rejected it because of the kind of sensitivity the subject has. I don’t want to name them, but three of them have already done it. Nobody was ready to produce the film... it’s very daring of John and Viacom to back up this project,” he adds.

Although Sircar has garnered many rave reviews about his script and direction, John and actor Nargis Fakhri’s acting skills have not been seen in the same light.

“I know there are criticisms for both of them. But given the situation, they have done a wonderful job. I have no complaints from John or Nargis. If you see the past records, I think they did it wonderfully. I’m satisfied as a director. They did their best,” says the Vicky Donor director, in their defense.

Moving on, his film Shoebite starring actor Amitabh Bachchan (which was completed 5 years back), hasn’t seen the light of the day. However, the director is writing another project for the veteran actor. “If any new idea comes to my mind, the first person I think of is Mr Bachchan. It sounds cliched, but I’m his biggest fan.

I’m writing a script which I’ll bounce it off to him,” he says.
