Trivia on the festival
Ganesh Chaturthi is an annual festival to honour Ganpati for ten days. The festival begins with people bringing in clay idols of Ganesha, symbolising Ganesha’s visit and culminates on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi, when idols (murtis) of Ganesha are immersed in a water body.

During the Indian independence struggle, social reformer Bal Gangadhar Tilak transformed this festival, which was earlier a mainstay in Pune, into a national public event to generate nationalistic fervour among people against the colonial rule.
