Rashid Irani's review: This Is US
ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US
Niall Horan, Harry Styles
A chronicle of the meteoric rise to fame of the titular English/Irish boy band whose pop songs have dominated the eardrums of legions of mostly tween girls, …This Is Us features reality-show-style staged sequences as well as concert footage of their recent world tour. In other words, let the squealing commence.
After a peek into their humble beginnings, celebrated documentarian Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) provides in-depth profiles of the affable quintet. Finalists on the 2010 British TV show, The X Factor, Horan, Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson were first grouped together by impresario Simon Cowell. The rest, as they say, is pop-music history.
Besides the cannily chosen tunes, including their top of the charts number Last First Kiss, we are made privy to the crooners’ backstage clowning, off-schedule relaxation trips and interactions with their families.
Incidentally, Martin Scorcese who has directed such dazzling music documentaries as Shine A Light and actor Chris Rock appear backstage to greet the group.
In an absurd interlude, a neuroscientist attempts to deconstruct the effect the fab five have on the fans who hypervente when in the proximity of their idols. Clocking in at 90 minutes, this One is for hardcore Direction-ers only.
