“We are moving to a higher level of meritocracy,” Murthy, who has given himself three years to rebuild Infosys into the corporate powerhouse it once was, told analysts last week. “We have somehow become slower. We have lost our razor-sharp focus. Decisions have become slower and most importantly, our focus on costs has got diluted,” he added.
“There is no room for slack anymore. The message is clear: deliver or move out,” the source said. Between 40 and 80 employees above the level of delivery manager have left Infosys following the performance appraisal in April. “Many more jobs could be on the line. There is palpable tension on the campus,” the source added.
In his interaction with analysts, Murthy downplayed the tensions.
“After all, what is happening is good for the company,” he told them.
Amidst this, there have been two high-profile exits — of executive council member Ashok Vemuri and before him of global sales head Basab Pradhan — though the precise reasons for their abrupt departures couldn’t be ascertained.
When contacted, the Infosys spokesperson said: “We have undertaken certain reorganisation within the firm to further improve our client focus and competitiveness. A few senior leaders have seen their roles enhanced as part of this reorganisation as well as a result of Ashok Vemuri’s resignation.”
