Anti-nuclear activists opposing the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu have accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of abandoning nuclear safety of Indians, in a bid to help American companies erect a ultra-mega nuclear power plant in Gujarat.
The People's Movement Against Nuclear
Energy, which is spearheading the protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant built with Russian help, hit out against the prime minister on Thursday in the strongest possible language, dubbing him a “crime minister” for allegedly diluting the liability law to favour American companies.
“This means, in case of a nuclear accident, those responsible can escape like (Warren) Anderson of Union Carbide did during Bhopal gas disaster of the 80s,” the PMANE said, describing it as a “seditious act”.
“The distrusted, discredited and lame-duck Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is in the fag-end of his prime ministership, should refrain from taking crucial policy decisions and from implementing important projects, cancel his American trip alltogether and defer the nuclear decision-making to the next government,” the struggle committee of the PMANE said.
Warren Anderson was the CEO of the Union Carbide when the Bhopal gas disaster took place in 1984, killing thousands of people and severely affecting thousands of others. Many believe that Anderson escaped punishment as India did not push Washington hard enough to ensure his extradition to face trial.
The wondered whether Manmohan Singh was working for the people of India or for America, Russia, France and other foreign countries and their corporations.
“In a characteristically bizarre, brazen and shameless manner, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has dodged the established regulations and procedures in setting up new nuclear power plants and used his handmaiden institution, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), to set up 6x1,000 MW nuclear power park at Mithi Virdi in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat,” the PMANE said in a press statement issued late on Thursday evening.
It said, the mandatory viability analysis has not yet been done before setting up this ultra-mega nuclear project and this showed UPA government’s contempt for the safety and security of the people of India.
