In a bid to attract first time and young voters ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Gujarat chief minister and BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi urged celebrities, political leaders and spiritual gurus to encourage youth to register themselves as voters.

The tech savvy Modi, who enjoys the largest following base on Twitter, tweeted to the PMO India, BJP's Sushma Swaraj, his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Sing Chauhan, union minister Shashi Tharoor, film celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Anupam Kher and leading spiritual gurus like Dalai Lama and Sri Sri Ravishanker.

"Respected @SriSriSpeaks let's encourage voter registration among 18-24 yr olds. Large number of them unregistered. EC drive presently underway," Modi posted on the twitter from his handle @narendramodi

Not only male stars, Modi also tweeted to leading heroines like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta with the same message.

"I request prominent voices on social media to promote voter registration among youngsters and strengthen our democracy," he stated in another tweet.

"Studies point to several 'eligible' voters who are yet unregistered. Are you one of them? Now is the time to get registered ASAP" he tweeted asking the youngsters to enroll as voters in a special drive the election commission of India has launched ahead of the next year parliamentary polls.

Reacting sarcastically on a series of tweets by Modi, Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted: "Spamming celebrities or is the account hacked? #just asking".
