In a sensational claim, the Mumbai crime branch has phone conversations which show that Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf Mailk alias Dada placed bets through actor Vindoo Dara Singh in the recently concluded T20 cricket tournament in matches he officiated in.
Rauf has been shown as a wanted
accused by the crime branch in the chargesheet filed on Saturday. Mumbai crime branch has begun the process of getting a letter rogatory to question Rauf and other Pakistani bookies.
Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (Crime) said, “Rauf not only passed information about weather and pitch, but also gave information about matches he stood in, predicted results and accepted expensive gifts.”
The chargesheet mentions about a call on May 15, between MI and RR when at 1.29 pm in which Rauf was the standing umprire.
Rauf called Vindoo and told him Aaj Zindagi ki haar jeet karlo Mumbai par. (Mumbai won the match). Similar, on May 14, the intercepted call revealed that Rauf had predicted the match results to Vindoo and also inquired about the gold that he was supposed to be given.
The intercept further says that rauf had invited Vindoo for lunch and also asked him to invite Jaipur brothers to discuss betting strategy. On the same day, Rauf asked them to place bets in the match between CSK and DD, when the rate of CSK was 40 paise.
Sources said some of the decisions made by Rauf are also being checked. Rauf was also given a SIM card by one of the bookie Pawan Jaipur. Vindoo called Rauf 80 times between April 12 and May 17 on the same card.
After the raid of Mumbai police on May 15, Pawan Jaipur called up Vindoo and asked him to destroy the SIM saying ‘Lafda hoga hai, Dada ko jo SIM diya tha wo destroy kar lo (There would be trouble, destroy the SIM card given to dada’. After which Vindoo called Rauf and asked him to destroy the SIM. Later Rauf fled from India when the crime branch raided Ramesh Vyas’s office.
Crime branch has seized two packets containing expensive watches, jeans, shoes and gold chains which were sent to Rauf by Pawan from the Delhi airport earlier in May. Police officials said Rauf violated section 4.2 of the T20 tournament which does not allow umpire to place bets.
