Siliguri police are soon going to write another letter to the state director general of police (DGP) seeking permission for the immediate arrest of G Kiran Kumar, the present Malda district magistrate (DM) and the former chief executive officer (CEO) of Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA), a senior officer said.

Kumar has been accused of violating norms for building three electric crematoriums and two sewerage treatment plants in Siliguri.

The Rs. 60 crore SJDA scam occurred in 2012.

“During investigation we found that Kumar was involved and it became imperative for us to arrest him. So, we are requesting the state home department to give us permission for his arrest. Earlier, we had sent a letter to the state home department in this regard, appealing the same,” said a senior officer of Siliguri Metropolitan Police.

The cops had earlier interrogated Kumar in connection with this scam.

When contacted, the DM declined to comment.

Police sources said that so far, seven cases have been registered and 10 people have been arrested in connection with this scam.

“Every file we seized we found the signature of Kumar (the then CEO). So, it appears that he certainly knew about the misappropriation of funds. Gautam Deb, the North Bengal development minister, and the present chairman of SDJA has assigned a team from Jadavpur University to probe into the installation of CCTVs. The installation is also a part of this scam,” said the police officer.

On May 16, the present CEO, Sharad Dwivedi, lodged a complaint with Pradhannagar police that government norms were violated while hiring a private construction firm for building three electric crematoriums and two sewerage treatment plants in Siliguri.

The probe into the matter was handed over to the detective department of Siliguri Police.

The cops have quizzed Rudranath Bhattacharya, the Trinamool Congress MLA and former chairman of SJDA, along with Chandan Bhowmik, the Jalpaiguri Trinamool Congress president.
