No matter what ‘tough measure’ Trinamool Congress is going to take against the rebel MPs, they are bound to remain with the party.
The party cannot afford to expel them as they would remain MPs and join their opponents.
It is the reason why the party could not expel Kabir Suman.
But the party may take stern action, hoping this will stop dissident activities.
Somen Mitra, Tapas Pal, Shatabdi Roy (Lok Sabha MPs) and Kunal Ghosh (Rajya Sabha MP), apart from Sikha Mitra (MLA) slammed Mamata Banerjee and the party leadership on Friday.
All of them are expected to serve their full term.
“We do not want to give undue advantage to those who have spoken against the party. According to rules if we expel them from the party they will still remain as MPs,” said a Lok Sabha MP close to Mamata.
“If we expel them, they will then be free, which may influence other leaders, MPs and MLAs. After expulsion they will remain MPs. We do not want to give them that advantage,” added the MP.
Trinamool Congress believes that Congress is providing tacit support to the rebel leaders.
The party fears that Congress will take advantage if they are expelled. There is a section of MLAs, MPs and party leaders who are waiting for a chance to speak out.
Partha Chatterjee, the convenor of the disciplinary committee, met on September 20 and decided to show cause the rebels.
The legal cell of the Trinamool is close coordinating the party’s action.
Over half a dozen MPs are likely not to be re-nominated as Lok Sabha candidates and they may also slam the party leadership.
The party fears that Somen Mitra is allegedly maintaining ties with Congress and has an organisational set up in Kolkata, South 24- Parganas and other parts of the state.
Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh can also damage the party by exposing the role of the top leadership in the Saradha Scam.
“If expelled they may be dangerous. We have already sidelined the so-called rebels. We do not want to give them much importance. They will be ostracised within the party like Kabir Suman. We will make them redundant,” said a Trinamool Congress core committee leader.
