Actor Sanjay Dutt seems all set to reprise his Lage Raho Munnabhai role, albeit in jail and with other inmates as his co-stars. The 54-year-old actor is hard at work to perfect his role in the play Teemiratun... Tejakade (From Darkness to Light) that deals with Gandhism and
The play is being directed by Rahul Solapurkar and Dutt’s friend and film director Rajkumar Hirani is giving inputs to fine-tune it. Hirani had directed Dutt in Lage Raho which was about ‘Gandhigiri’ as well.
Serving a jail term at Yerwada jail, the 54-year-old actor will perform at a cultural event on Thursday at Balgandharva auditorium. Sporting a salt-and-pepper beard and looking fit after losing some weight, Dutt will also dance to the song ‘Bande mein tha dum’ from Lage Raho.
He is the star attraction at the show and all donation passes, each priced at `1000, have been sold ahead of the event. It is an initiative to raise funds for the prison staff and their family members.
Dutt has been in prison since May 16 this year after being convicted for illegal possession of firearms related to the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.
National broadcaster Doordarshan will air the two-hour long event. The authorities expect to raise `5 lakh from ticket sales while sponsorships and television rights will fetch an additional sum.
“Dutt will perform in a play as well as dance. For this he has been rehearsing hard,” said Yerwada jail superintendent Yogesh Desai. He said the jail authorities had invited Hirani on the recommendations of Dutt. “Hirani gave his creative inputs while Solapurkar is directing the show.”
Besides the play, there will also be songs, dances and mimicry performances by other inmates. The event is likely to be attended by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and home minister RR Patil.
Thursday’s event is part of prison department’s yearly activity intended to raise money for jail staff and their family members. Due to Dutt’s participation, the prison officials are confident of the event becoming a hit. Anticipating a huge crowd, the police have beefed up the security at the auditorium.
