I am in a happy space: Amit Trivedi
Amit Trivedi is every bit the stereotype that popular culture paints of an artiste — genius and startlingly diffident. His monosyllabic answers to probing questions and unassuming hmms for a yes might perplex the interviewer, but somehow they also lend an endearing, almost childlike quality to his character.
This year has been exceptionally well for the composer, who admits that life’s never been busier for him. The music of Kai Po Che and Lootera received excellent reviews and his original songs for the TV music series Coke Studio too are amassing quite a following (if the number of YouTube views are anything to go by). In this interview, we nudge the reticent musician to chat and tell us about what he is up to.
You’ve been busy lately. Which films are you working on currently?
I am working on Bombay Velvet. The music for it is jazz from the ’60s. It will take me another year to finish the soundtrack; I work on it on and off. Then there’s Queen. It’s a fun-filled film so the music for it is also light-hearted, peppy and commercial.
You rarely speak to the media. Are you shy or pressed for time?
(Laughs) Both. Actually, I don’t know. I am always in my space and it’s a happy space. It gets stressful at times, but that’s a part and parcel of our job.
In a previous interview with HT Café, you’d said that you won’t be part of Coke Studio owing to your hectic schedule. But you did feature in it. How did that happen?
They (the makers of the show) were not ready to leave me. Although I was very busy, they adjusted the dates and in the end, everything worked out fine. This season, unlike the last, I got less time to prepare for my songs. I hope people like them. I have experimented a lot lyrically.
Many composers are turning performers too. Do you have any plans to follow suit?
No, I’m not planning anything (like that) right now.
