In her first public meeting after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi criticised the government on the ordinance on convicted legislators, party president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday praised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for bringing social welfare schemes.

Inaugurating the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Development Studies, a research centre to groom and mentor party leaders, in Neyyar (on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram) she asked workers and leaders to reach out to people and make them aware of the many social welfare schemes introduced by the UPA government.

“We need more such programmes. Under the able leadership of Manmohan Singh we can do it,” she said without mentioning some of the recent measures like the food security bill.

However, she skipped politics. She said the late Rajiv Gandhi, who was PM, would have been proud of the institute and also of its workers.“This institute should see that it churns out young leaders who will take the country forward in the 21st century. Apart from research activities, the centre should see that training is given to students to gain practical knowledge, which will help the country,” she said.
