Strong resentment prevails among commuters of the city as for the past three days the municipal corporation has blocked several parallel roads in southern sectors for carrying out carpeting of roads.
The commuters are having a tough time and have to wait for hours, especially during peak hours.

Carpeting work is in progress on most of the inner roads in Sectors 32, 35 and 44, and that too at the same time.

Interestingly, the MC had transferred several sub-divisional officers (SDOs) on September 27 internally, but most of them have not joined duty.

SDO Ajay Garg, who was transferred to Ram Darbar from Sector 35, wanted to complete roads before joining the new subdivision. He deputed five contractors on v-6 roads (internal roads), v-5 (sub-sectors connecting roads) and cycle tracks and v-3 (sector dividing road) in Sectors 35 and 43.

Even after heavy rain on Thursday, the carpeting work continued in Sector 35.

However, when contacted, Garg admitted that he had been transferred on September 27, but decided to join on Monday as Navratras were beginning. He said the work was on in Sectors 35 and 44.

Nominated councillor Surinder Bahga said, "It is very unfortunate that the work of carpeting is on in only one ward, whereas several agendas of carpeting work has been approved for the entire city. I will take up the issue with officials concerned."

Pawan Dhand, a resident of Sector 32, said, "The carpeting of roads in the city during peak traffic hours is leading to traffic chaos and causing harassment to people. Without any notice, barricades have been put up and people have to take alternate routes. This causes harassment to the commuters. Any disruption of traffic during office hours at one stretch causes a jam on several stretches."
