A portion of his daily income at the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi would be deposited with the Victims of the Offence Welfare Trust.
Although, the task to be assigned to Lalu after 15 days in jail (as per rules) has not been decided, it is speculated that he would be teaching other inmates the fine art of politics.
The former Bihar chief minister has a bachelor’s degree in political science, is a law graduate from Patna Law College and has an honorary doctorate from Patna University.
“During the 15-day period, we observe the convict and see how they have adapted to the jail environment. Accordingly, we assign them a job,” said Singh.
The jail manual, however, bars VIP prisoners from interacting with non-VIP inmates for security reasons.
Being a VIP prisoner, Lalu may not have to don the jail colours — black and white — but he has already been assigned a number — Qaidi No. 1528 — his only identity for all purposes while in jail.He was earlier assigned temporary identity of Qaidi No. 3312.
Another former Bihar CM who has been jailed in the same case, Jagannath Mishra was allocated prisoner identification number 1529. The new numbers were allotted after the sentence documents reached Birsa Jail authorities late on Friday night from the court.
Mishra is currently lodged at the state-run Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital.
