The row over malnutrition in Gujarat over the national auditor’s findings heated up. Responding to a volley of criticism from the Congress and other parties that conditions in Narendra Modi-ruled Gujarat weren’t as rosy as made out, Rajya Sabha’s deputy opposition leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the entire campaign was false and malicious.

The BJP leader said CAG report no. 22 of 2012-13 relating to performance audit of ICDS scheme (relating to malnutrition) was before the Parliament and was also available on the website of CAG.

He said annexure 6.4 of the said report contains the state- wise nutritional status of children from the year 2006-07 to 2010-11. “This shows that all the BJP-run governments have done remarkably well in reduction of grade I & II malnutrition. Grade III & IV - severe malnutrition is below 1% in all the states except two. Gujarat has done remarkably well in reducing it from 70% (69.83) to 34% (34.21%) if the data of March 2013 is taken it is 25.09%.”

Prasad held that the record of all Congress ruled state governments except Maharashtra had been very poor in reducing it. The entire data was provided by the ministry of women and child development.

He released a comparative chart shown in Annexure 6.4 (para 6.3.2) of CAG report no. 22 of 2012-13. “The chart clearly shows that among big states, the BJP-ruled ones have done very well in reducing the number of malnutrition.”
