A curfew-like situation prevailed in the Gaumat area of Khair tehsil in Uttar Pradesh on Monday after large-scale demonstrations over an incident of eve teasing on October 5.
In view of the tension, the administration imposed Section 144, banned holding of panchayats and entry of
political leaders in the area.
Aligarh, Bulandshahr, Mathura and Hathras districts had been put on alert while ADM (administration) and SP (Rural) were camping in the area to avert any untoward incident, said Ashutosh Pande, IG (Agra zone).
The atmosphere of Khair is charged just like Kawal village of Muzaffarnagar after an incident of eve teasing. Jats of the Khair areas also tried to hold a mahapanchayat but the district administration foiled their attempts.
The community, however, was preparing to hold a mahapanchayat secretly, said sources.
On October 5, two girls were eve teased in a bus that was going to Gaumat.
The accused also assaulted the brother of the victims following which villagers ransacked Gaumat market and jammed the Aligarh-Palwal road in protest.
It all began when a Jat woman was travelling in the bus from Faridabad to Nojheel along with her two daughters and nephew. When the bus reached Gomat crossing, two youths of another community boarded the vehicle and eve teased the girls.
This resulted in a conflict between the accused and the nephew of the woman.
On reaching Gaumat, the accused called other members of his community and beat up the nephew.
The seven accused -- Jabid, Nasir, Zaheeer, Yasin, Qadir, Rafeeq and Naeem were arrested and sent to jail.
Later in the day, villagers got infuriated after a rumour that the police were also registering an FIR against the other party.
They began preparations to hold a mahapanchayat in Ahraula village, but SDM Kumar Vineet reached the spot and calm downed the people by assuring suitable action.
In the meantime, district magistrate Rajeev Rotailla banned the entry of political leaders in Khair and nearby areas. Some local leaders of the BJP and the Congress tried to reach there, but were stopped from doing so.
