Alleging negligence and laxity in arresting the policeman allegedly involved in the murder of a man and his son in Kahlanwali village on Tuesday, the victims' family members and residents of the village on Wednesday placed their bodies on the Batala-Dera Baba Nanak road and sat on
Demanding strict action against the station house officer of the Dera Baba Nanak police station, whose alleged laxity led to the murder of Bhagwan Singh and his son Ranjodh Singh, protesters alleged that a few hours before his murder, Bhagwan had lodged a complaint at the police station, asking for action against Virsa Singh, who was allegedly trying to grab one marla adjoining their house.
The protesters also demanded that a first information report (FIR) be registered against Virsa's relative Inderjeet Singh, who is a station house officer at Majitha police station. Bhagwan's mother Pyar Kaur alleged that Inderjeet was also present on the spot when the accused, Batala police constable Parminder Singh, and his supporters barged into their house and attacked them.
"When my son Bhagwan returned home, Virsa's son Parminder, who was waiting outside his house, started abusing my son, as someone from the Dera Baba Nanak police had told him that my son had lodged a complaint against them. Parminder then called his supporters and barged into our house, and attacked my son with sharp-edged weapons.
When my grandson Ranjodh tried to rescue his father, the miscreants fired at him and killed him on the spot," she alleged, adding that the miscreants then shot her son and later fired at her relative Tersem Singh, who was also present in the house.
The protesters alleged that police was not arrested the prime accused Parminder as he was a constable.
The protest ended and the bodies removed only after superintendent of police (detective) Vipin Chowdhary reached the spot and assured the protesters that the accused would be arrested within 24 hours.
Batala senior superintendent of police SS Mand said that two of the accused, Maninder Singh and Makhan Singh had already been arrested, and efforts were on to nab the other accused.
"Dera Baba Nanak station house officer Satpal Singh has been sent to police lines with immediate effect, for negligence. An inquiry has also been marked against him," he said.
