UP MLA's wife stabbed, shot in Delhi home
An Uttar Pradesh MLA’s wife was found murdered in their northeast Delhi home in New Jaffrabad on Wednesday morning with multiple stab wounds and a bullet lodged in her chest. Rehana Begum was found dead by her neighbours who were called by the domestic help after the doorbell went unanswered. Rehana was stabbed eight times in her back, twice in the neck and was also shot, said the police.
The 40-year-old was the second wife of Haji Alim Choudhary, the Bahujan Samaj Party MLA from Bulandshahr. A four-time MLA, Choudhary, 56, reportedly left India on Tuesday for Haj, a day after the couple came to Delhi. Well-known for his muscle and money power, Choudhary (named M Aleem Khan in assembly records) has six criminal cases against him.
Part of a dance troupe, Rehana met Choudhary in the late 80s during Haj. They married in 1990.
The brutality of the murder and the apparent ease with which assailants entered the house — no locks were broken — has the police suspecting the involvement of somebody known.
Joint commissioner of police (Eastern Range) Sanjay Beniwal said the crime scene was dressed to look like a robbery gone bad. “But the jewellery she was wearing, including two thick gold bangles, were untouched,” he said, adding at last two people were involved. They were looking at all possibilities -- a property dispute, personal rivalry or even a crime of passion, he said.
