The municipal corporation (MC) of Chandigarh will auction 18 parking lots in the city by the end of this month, but has left one parking lot in Sector 34 (near the old passport office).
The term of all these parking lots will end in November.
MC additional commissioner Sunil
Bhatia said, “I will check on Monday that how the department has left the said parking lot.”
On asking about the date of auction, he said, “We have invited bids till October 22 and will hold auction by the end of this month.”
Speaking to HT, contractor of site in Sector 34 Ravinder Singh said, “I have applied for extension and I'm hopeful to get it in a couple of days.”
Surprisingly, the contractor of Sector 9-D parking lot, who also applied for extension, failed to get any extension and the MC has included this parking lot in auction.
There are total 24 paid parking lots in the city.
In the auction held on August 13 this year, the civic body received a jolt as they failed to find even a single bidder in the auction for the five paid parking lots. The bidders did not come forward due service tax of 12.36% imposed on them.
Besides, the MC did not receive any form for a new parking lot near Piccadily multiplex in Sector 34 and the parking lot of district courts in Sector 17.
Contactor Ranvir Singh Rana said, “In the entire city, no contractor is ready to take parking lots due to service tax of 12.36%. Moreover, the MC is asking us pay service tax from September 1 last year. We have urged the authorities to relax the conditions only then contractors will participate in the auction.”
Sec-17 underground parking lot crying for attention
The tall claims of the civic body regarding maintaining underground parking lots have fallen flat as the one in front of medical officer health in Sector 17 is in a bad shape. Water can be seen accumulated and garbage scattered all over. The parking lot has two levels and can accommodate 700 two-wheelers and 100 four-wheelers. On a visit, it was found that one the levels was locked.
