Patil said the pilot project would first be l aunched in Mumbai, for which the police have been asked to evaluate the need for additional logistical support such as vehicles and manpower.
This is the third time that the minister has made such a promise. As reported in Hindustan Times’s February 13 edition, he had promised police escorts for women who felt unsafe while travelling at night.
After a photojournalist was gangraped at Shakti Mill compound, Mahalaxmi, in August, Patil had announced police protection to women journalists if they demanded it while on assignments at odd hours.
Now, the home department has decided to extend the service to all women.
