Former member of legislative assembly (MLA) from Sirhind and former deputy speaker Bir Devinder Singh on Thursday submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner Arun Sekhri, demanding repair and maintenance of four memorial gates raised here by the state government in 2003 to commemorate the third
centenary of the martyrdom of Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, the two younger sons of Sikh guru Gobind Singh.
Alleging that the footpaths and other areas around the gates were covered by a thick growth of vegetation, including nearly five ft high congress grass, while floodlights installed to illuminate the structures at night have been non-functional for some time, he warned that if work was not done to improve the condition of the gates and roads leading to Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib by November 15, residents would sit on dharnas at the gates.
"After that, public would start kar sewa with the help of saints and senior citizens of the area,"he added. The Diwan Todar Mal memorial gate, which is situated on the road connecting the town to the GT Road, is surrounded by sewage and dirty water released by residents and shopkeepers from both sides, as drains have not been provided in the area.
Four public sector undertakings in the state had constructed the gate at a cost of crores of rupees.
The memorial gates, raised to commemorate 300 years of the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas, who were killed in December 1703 by the then governor of Sirhind Wazir Khan, were dedicated to the memory of Baba Moti Ram Mehra, Nawam Sher Mohamad Khan of Malerkotla, Diwan Todar Mal and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, revered for playing a great role in shaping the state's history.
Within ten years of construction, these memorial gates show signs of utter neglect, thanks to the apathy of the government and district administration. Gurnam Singh, social activist, Bhaironpur
The district administration seems to be sleeping. It should attend to these gates, constructed in the memory of legendary figures. Gurpal Singh, Himmatpura village
The issue has come to my notice today. I will call a meeting of departments concerned and issue them directions
Arun Sekhri, deputy commissioner
