On her part, Gandhi said, "there is a danger from some ideologies, organisations and the people who want to divide us".
The two leaders were speaking at a function to present the 28th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration to noted agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan. Invoking late PM Indira Gandhi, Sonia said: "We have always kept national unity as our top priority. We need to remember Indira Gandhi's courage so that we can fight that fear with conviction".
Gandhi lauded the public sector's efforts to connect the people of different regions but lamented that not much attention was being paid to unite the country these days.
In his address, Singh stressed on the need to follow the path shown by late Indira Gandhi in keeping the country united.
He also recalled the late PM's contribution in the social and economic development of the masses and said she wanted to take the benefits of development to weaker sections of the society.
