The city this year has experienced the coldest first week of November since 2008, with minimum temperatures ranging between 11.6°C to 15.4°C.
Meteorological department director JR Prasad said the decline in temperature was caused by western disturbances over north Pakistan and Jammu
and Kashmir, and upper air cyclonic circulation.
Prasad added that the temperature would continue to decrease over the next two to three days, and the state would witness light fog with isolated rain and thundershowers.
“The western disturbance would continue to move slowly across the Himalayas over the next two to three days, after which weather would remain mainly dry,” he added.
The director said the city had last witnessed a cold November in 2008, when the minimum temperature plummeted to 10.5°C.
With the decrease in minimum temperature, residents were seen wearing woollens, while the parks wore a deserted look as children preferred to stay indoors.
Besides, trains reportedly ran late as smog enveloped the area around the railway station.
Karamjeet Kaur of Lehal Colony said, “The weather has changed suddenly, with the temperature dipping, so we are avoiding sending our children out to play.”
The sudden change in weather has led to an increase in the sale of woollen clothes, with residents thronging markets to buy protective clothing.
“Sales have shot up post-Diwali as there is a huge demand for windcheaters due to the prevailing cold winds,” said Dharmapal Singh, a shopkeeper at the AC Market.
Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital principal KD Singh said the sudden change in weather could cause health issues, especially in those suffering from heart-related ailments and hypertension.
“Cold makes people more prone to viral diseases and nasal or respiratory infections, so precautionary measures are a must,” he added.
Singh advised that people should wear full-length woollen clothes, avoid exposure and use warm water for bathing.
