Investigators may charge Dhananjay Singh, the member of Parliament from Jaunpur, for criminal conspiracy for not intervening despite having heard his wife threaten to kill their domestic help Rakhi Bhadra.
Jagriti had allegedly declared her intent to kill the 35-year-old to
Dhananjay on the telephone on November 1.
“Bhabi used to get terribly angry whenever she suspected that Rakhi wasn’t taking adequate care of her three-year-old son. On November 1, she beat Rakhi very badly and called Dhananjay to tell him that she would kill her,” the couple’s 17-year-old domestic help said in his statement to the police.
Another threat was made on November 3, after Bhadra failed to clean a store room in the couple’s South Avenue flat in the two hours she’d been given by the dental surgeon.
“On November 3, she (Jagriti) gave Rakhi two hours to clean the store room and warned her that she wouldn’t get any dinner if the store hadn’t been cleaned within the deadline,” the minor help said in his statement.
“When Rakhi, because of her injuries, couldn’t do so till night, bhabi began assaulting her in a rage yelling that she was tired of her daily sloppiness and would kill her,” the statement reads.
The investigators said they were in the process of verifying the involvement of a trans-border human trafficking ring in the case as the MP and his wife continued to stonewall each other in custody at the Chanakyapuri police station.
Apart from making attempts to trace Dev Kumar, who had brought Rakhi to the MP after having introduced himself as a placement agency owner in Chirag Dilli, the police are verifying whether he had been arrested for a similar offence not long ago.
Rakhi could have been a Bangladeshi who had crossed over to India before being brought to Delhi, police sources indicated.
Police officers were yet to gain access to the digital video recorder which contains video footage of the couple’s network of 20 surveillance cameras.
Jagriti and her husband Dhananjay Singh are yet to say a word to each other and, according to police sources, are lodged in bathrooms meant for police personnel.
