“So much so, she hadn’t even called them on the phone for the last one year,” a police officer said.
But the lack of contact may have been due to the fact that the BSP MP’s wife, Dr Jagriti Singh, took away two of Bhadra’s mobile phones. She has confessed to this, the police said, adding that she did it on the instructions of Dev Kumar, the placement agent who brought Bhadra and another maid, Meena, to her.
Such instructions are not unusual in cases of trafficking. “It is natural for the agent to ask a potential employer to prohibit the victim from getting in touch with the family lest they inform them about the exploitation,” the officer added.
