Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his wife Sadhna Singh on Monday issued a legal notice to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, state Congress chief Kantilal Bhuria and the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) over an advertisement issued by the party on November
Through the ad, Congress had accused Chouhan, his wife and some members of his family of corruption.
The advertisement appeared under the title 'Mukhiya ke munh par taala, lalchi parivar ne Madhya Pradesh loot dala' (Head of the family keeps mum, greedy family loots Madhya Pradesh).
It talked about presence of currency counting machine at home, a brother-in-law making billions through contract, a brother purchasing land worth crores of rupees at throwaway price and the wife purchasing dumper by furnishing fake documents.
Chouhan and his wife have demanded that the Congress party should withdraw its allegations within 15 days or face a criminal prosecution under section 499 of IPC, which includes a Rs. 2 crore-fine and initiation of civil proceedings for recovery of damages to the tune of Rs. 10 crore.
"We write to make you aware of the irreparable reputational loss, trauma and agony that the recent unsubstantiated and false statements/advertisement published in the media on November 13, 2013 has caused to our clients and their family members," said the notice issued by advocate Shashank Shekhar on behalf of the CM and his wife.
The notice also said that the MPCC has knowingly and intentionally raised false and baseless allegations of corruption against Chouhan and his wife to defame and cause harm and damage to their reputation and goodwill.
It said that some of these charges were levelled against them by Congress leaders, like AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh and leader of Opposition in state assembly Ajay Singh, in the past well but nothing could be substantiated.
Chouhan and his wife have already initiated criminal proceedings for defamation against Ajay Singh for the latter's charges against them in his speeches that Singh made about six months ago.
