A national lok adalat was held at the district courts complex here on Saturday in which around 27,292 cases were settled by all the 33 benches set up in the district. The lok adalat was inaugurated by justice AK Mittal of Punjab and Haryana high court. A sum of Rs. 20.92 crore was awarded as compensation to the aggrieved parties. Most of the cases pertained to domestic disputes, dowry cases, traffic challans, cheque bounce, land disputes and accidental claims besides summary trials. The district and session judge JS Klar said that till date this year 34 lok adalats were held in the district in which 12,154 cases were decided and Rs. 26 crore awarded as compensation to the litigants.

More than 13,000 cases settled in Hoshiarpur

As many as 13,336 cases were settled amicably in the National Loka Adalat which was held in the district on Saturday. In all 20,539 cases including those under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Motor Accidents Compensation Act, matrimonial and family cases, labour disputes, land acquisition cases, civil and revenue cases, came up for hearing before 19 judicial and 13 revenue court benches.

A sum of Rs. 30.10 crore was decreed to concerned parties. High court judge Rakesh K Jain and district and session judge GK Dhir inspected the lok adalats. DLSA secretary, chief judicial magistrate Rashmi Sharma revealed that  pre-lok adalat meetings with banks, insurance companies, civil and police authorities, were conducted to identify the cases to be taken up at the Lok adalat, claiming that a cooperative approach was adopted to settle the cases. She revealed that as many as 3,555 traffic challan cases were also disposed of at the traffic bench and fine worth `13.51 lakh recovered.

District and sessions judge GK Dhir said that prior to the national lok adalat, 179 lok adalats were held in the district in which 59,725 cases were settled through negotiations.

12,671 cases settled in Kaputhala

As many as 12,671 cases were settled in the district during the national lok adalat organised on Saturday under the chairmanship of justice RP Nagrath of Punjab and Haryana high court. A total of 24 benches were set up in the district, of which 12 were set up at the district courts, here. 7,531 cases settled in Nawanshahr

A total of  7,531 cases were settled by the 10 benches set up in the district, including nine at Nawanshahr and one at Balachaur, as part of the national lok adalat on Saturday. A sum of Rs. 5 crore was awarded as compensation to the aggrieved parties at these lok adalats. HTC.
