This winter, indulge in some sun soaked shopping at this ongoing bazaar in the Capital. Called the Dastkar Winter Weaves, the exhibit cum shopping fest has brought together handlooms and weaving techniques from all across the country.
From fine silks, woollens to block prints and
embroidery, a wide range of saris, dupattas, running fabric, shawls, knits and made-up garments will be exhibited at the fest. “This is one of the differently themed monthly events that features varied aspects of Indian crafts and textiles. The event will add to the message, that crafts in India have such extraordinary potential,” says Laila Tyabji, chairperson, Dastkar. New products at this season’s fest include tussar silk weaves from Maharashtra, tangail saris from West Bengal, punja dhurries from Punjab, a wonderful range of designed winter jackets and even exotic weaves all the way from Bhutan. Also, a must-see are the 20-feet high wall hangings.
“These have been created by a team of craftswomen, specialised in appliqué and embroideries, from the Banaskantha region of Gujarat. These panels are a testimony to the power and potential of traditional craftspeople when they receive their due recognition and patronage,” adds Tyabji.
While you are here, watch out for ikat weaves from the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh traditions, jamdani and Banarasi brocades and kullu and kinnauri wool shawls from Himachal Pradesh. Also exhibited are the Kutch shawls and stoles by expert weavers from the Vankar community.
