In the past few months, there’s been a flurry of activity on Priyanka Chopra’s Twitter and Instagram feeds. Pictures of the actor-singer posing with everyone from footballer Cristiano Ronaldo to rapper Nick Cannon, have found their way online and earned Priyanka a reputation for partying and
going on networking sprees during her trips to Los Angeles, USA.
However, Priyanka denies it, saying, “I’ve only travelled there for work. The recent events I’ve been to have been work-related. I don’t attend parties. I don’t even know how to network, which is horrible because that’s how stuff works there.”
Justifying her meetings with the likes of Pitbull and Will.i.am, Priyanka says that the only reason they worked together is because all three are represented by the same music label. “They have over 100 artistes on board and I’m one of their priority acts at the moment. So it becomes easier to work with top artistes, producers and writers,” she claims. In this chat, Priyanka also discusses her next single, upcoming films and falling in love. When is your next release?
Gunday will release early next year. There’s still some time for Mary Kom. Two more films are in the pipeline, but I’ll wait for the producers to officially announce them. In January, my third song will be out. It’ll probably be my first solo single. There are rumours of you working with Jay Sean and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan too.
I made two songs with Jay Sean. I now have about 45 of them (in total), but I don’t know which ones will eventually make it to the album. As for Rahat, he hasn’t officially approached me, but if we do work together, I’ll have to do two months of riyaaz to prepare (laughs). After recently shooting for Karan Johar’s talk show with Deepika Padukone, you thanked her for ‘having your back’. What was that all about?
We’ve been friends for years. We had common friends and we went out together, so I was happy to be on the show with someone I’m comfortable with. Karan is known to try and put his guests in uncomfortable spots, so every time I got stuck, she would cover for me.
What about Mary Kom? We hear there’s a separate English release planned, with tight editing and no lip-synced songs.
We’re only 30 per cent done and many of these decisions are taken much later. It’s not a conventional story, so I don’t think you’ll see Mary breaking into song and dance, but there’s some amazing music.
You have more cousins entering the industry now. Will you make a conscious effort to work with them?
After Parineeti (Chopra), Barbie (Handa) and Meera (Chopra) are both making their Bollywood debuts. I think my conscious effort would be to first help them settle in. I want to have their backs because no one had mine as a newcomer. Barbie and I have done three ads together already; if something good comes up, I’d love to work with all of them.
When is your brother (Siddharth) getting married? Did your aunts try to find you a match at his roka?
I hope he doesn’t get married anytime soon (laughs). Not just at the roka, but ever since I turned 16, all my aunts have been trying to set me up. I think marriage is every girl’s ambition, but you can’t give yourself a time frame because you don’t know when you’ll find the right guy.
But when you do find the guy, you might be too busy with work.
I don’t believe in stopping love, but he has to be worth it. The only kind of love that should exist is where you’re willing to give up the last sip of water in a desert for him, and yes, I have come close to feeling that way for someone before.
You shot with Bryan Adams recently. Any chance of a music collaboration with him?
We shot the Guess campaign and it was a lot of fun. I didn’t know he could take such great pictures. We listened to a lot of Hindi music during the shoot. He’s threatened to pull me up on stage when he’s here next, and I’ve threatened to refuse (laughs).
