"1.72 lakh voters were in queue by 5pm. So, we decided to allow all those who were in queue to vote even if it goes till late in the evening," an Election Commission Official said.
Delhi recorded the highest turount of around 66% and the official said it may go up further as they were still compiling the data.
So far, Delhi's highest voter turnout has been 61.75% recorded in 1993 assembly election.
In 2003 and 2008 assembly polls, 53.42% and 57.58% polling were recorded respectively.
A total of 1.19 crore voters were eligible to vote, out of whom around 80 lakh exercised their franchise.
Election Commission officials said the voting percentage in nine assembly constituencies in South Delhi grew by 11% compared to polls in 2008.
In nine constituencies in East Delhi, the polling percentage witnessed a 7.9% jump.
