A day after performing at the much-criticised Saifai Mahotsav, Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit justified their presence at the event, saying they were in the UP town for charity.
The mahotsav was organised in the native village of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav
and he was present during the performances along with his son and UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
The UP government drew flak for focusing on Saifai Mahotsav instead of Muzaffarnagar riot victims.
Salman Khan wrote on the social networking site that the Being Human team has committed to fund 200 paediatric heart surgeries in UP.
The actor's post read, "Whenever I visit a place for a performance or a promotion, I see it as an opportunity to help the locals in the areas of healthcare or education. In Nagpur, on Sunday, Being Human pledged to fund 100 paediatric cardiac cases in Maharashtra State."
He further wrote, "And in Etawah, Being Human, on behalf of all artists who performed yesterday, has committed to fund 200 paediatric heart surgeries in UP (there is already a wait list of 81 children we have received who are being moved to Fortis Hospital Gurgaon and their surgeries will get done by month end and Being Human is in touch with local NGOs and hospitals for their lists also).”
"We have also contributed Rs. 25 lakh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital for the purchase of an Echo Machine, Pediatric and neo natal ventilator and a portable X-ray machine for their paediatric cardiac ICU," Salman Khan added in his post.
Dixit, whose latest release 'Dedh Ishqiya' got an aid of Rs. 1 crore sum from the UP government, also took to Twitter to defend her participation.
"As artists and celebrities, we believe in using our reach to help others through drawing attention to the needs of the day," Madhuri, 46, tweeted.
Besides Salman and Madhuri, the event was attended by celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Sara Khan, Elli Avram, Mallika Sherawat, Zarine Khan, music composer duo Sajid-Wajid, singer Javed Ali and many other TV actors.
