An Indian-origin man in Britain has been sentenced for life for killing his friend in order to claim around Rs.
2.71 crore in life insurance that he had taken out in the defendant's name.
Last week, 44-year-old Jagdev Singh Rai was imprisoned for life for
slitting Jasbir Singh Bains's throat and throwing his body into the water in Dartmouth Park of West Bromwich in the West Midlands. Bains dead body was spotted by a passerby floating on November 28, 2012.
The Wolverhampton Crown Court was told that the accused, who also goes by the name Jamie Rai, planned to dispose the 41-year-old victim after stealing his identity for an insurance payout. The duo had known each other since school. Bains was homeless and was struggling with alcohol and drugs addiction at the time of murder.
The phone records revealed that Rai had invited Bains to the park on the night of his death. Also usually static camera outside Rai's home on Salisbury Road, changed angles on the night of murder which prosecutors argued couldn't be a co-incidence.
Rai had just come out of the prison after serving his 18 month jail term when he targeted his friend. On 27 July 2010, he had run over 28-year-old Raju Gurbaksh Singh near a motorway service station in Scotland. It was the second time he was caught driving despite being disqualified.
In a statement, Bains's family said: “Jasbir was a kind, caring, hard working man who was well-liked by everyone who knew him and he would never have harmed anyone.
“We are overjoyed by the verdict and the sentence and feel justice has been done, however this will never bring Jasbir back to us.”
“We miss him terribly but at least we can start to move on and find some kind of closure."
“This was a cold, calculated murder purely driven by greed. We would like to thank the police and prosecutors for their dedication and hard work in bringing the defendant to justice.”
Rai has been sentenced to life, with a minimum of 27 years imprisonment and a further four-and-half years sentence to run simultaneously for three fraud offences.
