Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leader Baljinder Singh Jindu, resident of Model Gram area, allegedly had a spat with president of the Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Model Gram on Friday evening.
The accused allegedly shot at him thrice, out of which one bullet hit Galhotra on the left side of abdomen. The accused fled from the scene immediately.
The case has been registered following the statement of Gurdeep Singh Galhotra, brother of Jatinder Singh Galhotra.
In his statement Gurdeep Singh told police that his brother Jatinder Singh Galhotra has convened a meeting of members of the shrine for opening of a library in the gurdwara premises on Friday.
Accused Jindu was demanding that shops be built on the gurdwara premises. Jatinder told him that the committee had been authorised to take the decision about the shops.
Following that, the accused allegedly started abusing him and in a fit of rage opened fire on him.
Police commissioner Paramjit Singh Gill said the police reached the spot and initiated investigation. The police arrested the accused within six hours of the incident.
He further added that no matter what the position the accused might hold, the police would take appropriate action against him.
