Left out of the scheme her things by AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, the Left parties on Thursday announced breaking of alliance with AIADMK.
After a meeting between the leaders of CPM and CPI, the decision was conveyed to the media jointly. Later in a press statement, also issued jointly,
the two parties said they would fight the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu separately.
AIADMK chief had announced the names of her party candidates to all the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu without concluding the seat sharing agreement with the Left parties.
The CPM and CPI were seeking three seats each, whereas Jayalalithaa is said to have offered one seat each to her alliance partners since 2011 assembly polls.
The seat sharing discussions took place for over a fortnight between the leaders of the Left parties and the AIADMK and there were six rounds of talks.
The Left which joined AIADMK to defeat the Congress and the BJP have no other option but to contest alone.
This decision puts a huge question mark over the prime ministerial ambitions of Jayalalithaa as she was being seen as a player at the national level and was one of the prominent leaders in the emerging third front.
In another development that changes political equations on the ground, the regional party floated by film star Vijayakanth, DMDK announced that it was in talks with the BJP for an electoral alliance. An announcement was made on Captain TV.
Party sources said that BJP president Rajnath Singh was likely to come to Chennai once the talks resulted in seat sharing agreement. The two parties would formally sign the agreement during the BJP president’s visit, sources said.
DMK patriarch wasted no time on Thursday in inviting Left parties to DMK fold, hours after the CPM and CPI walked out of AIADMK alliance in a huff.
When asked by press persons, the DMK chief said “If they (Left parties) come, we will accept them.”
He was talking to press persons after finishing seat sharing talks with DMK alliance partner, VCK.
