A wild hyena attacked a middle-aged man while he was walking on the national highway on Sunday, badly injuring him in a fight that lasted for over 10 minutes. The incident occurred near Udaypura More on National Highway-75 around 6pm on Sunday evening when the injured identified as Satyanarayan Thakur (45) was going to Udaypura from his village in Latehar. The hyena fled leaving behind Yadav in a pool of blood after it saw a car approaching. The locals who reached the spot later brought the victim to the Latehar Sadar Hospital. Yadav had suffered severe injuries on both his arms during his fight with the savage wild animal. The doctors attending to him reported his condition out of danger. However, the palpable fear could be seen on his face at the hospital on Monday. Talking to HT while undergoing treatment at hospital, Satyanarayan said, “I was going to Udayapura on Sunday evening. Something attacked me from behind,

when I had just reached the NH. I was taken aback initially. Soon I realised that it was a hyena. He was biting my hands. I tried to force him away but he

continued to attack me.”
Yadav further narrated his ordeal, “On seeing no option, I had to combat him. I kept pushing him away and he went on charging at me for over 10 minutes.

However, on seeing the lights from approaching vehicles, he left me. Otherwise, I could not have withstood his brutal power and he might have easily killed me.” On being informed, the forest department officials visited the hospital and assured him of all possible help. Latehar range officer Madan Mohan Ram said, “The injured will be compensated as per the government norms.”
