Last time, he had defeated the BJP candidate, Sunil Soren. He had not made any campaign. Earlier, Sunil was a JMM worker who had joined the BJP in 2005.
This time Sibu might have to fight with the JVM supremo Babulal Marnadi. The JVM has yet to announce his name. If Babulal contests again from Dumka, the constituency would be a key constituency in Jharkhand.
“During the 2009 elections, Guruji was sick. He didn’t campaign even for a single day in his constituency, but the people made him victorious. It does not matter who is his rival,” said party general secretary Vijay Singh.
“For tribal community, Sibu is Dishom Guru (Guru of world). This high profile prestige he has achieved for his role in abolition of money lending, which is locally called Mahajani system in the Santhal Parganas,”said Subhash Singh, the district president of JMM.
Sibu hails from Nemra village, situated in Giridih district. In 1974 during the days of united Bihar, he had arrived Dumka to fight against the money lending system which had broken the backbone of local tribals. His popularity made him a tribal activist. He met the former prime minister Indira Gandhi and soon plunged into the election arena in 1980 and won Lok Sabha election from Dumka first time.
