Three policemen including a sub-inspector were seriously injured in a landmine explosion triggered by the outlawed outfit CPI-Maoists in Jharkhand's Maoist affected Khunti district Tuesday morning.
A platoon of security forces comprising Jharkhand Armed Police were on its way to Hotma
village under Murhu police station in two vehicles to launch combing operation when the team was ambushed by the Maoists.
"Our forces were moving towards the village to launch operations in the nearby forested area," said Anish Gupta superintendent of police (SP) Khunti.
Sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Khunti Deepak Sharma said, the Maoists triggered a landmine approximately two kilometers from the village."
"Seeing the crater formed by the explosion it seems Maoists had planted an IED weighing up to 15 kilograms," added Sharma.
A crater two meter in radius and around four feet deep was formed due to the landmine explosion.
The injured have been identified as officer-in-charge of Murhu police station Pravin Jha, driver Roshan and a JAP Jawan. The three were rushed to Apollo hospital in Ranchi for medical attention.
"All the three injured are out of danger," said Javed Akhtar, spokesperson Apollo hospital.
Soon after the explosion a massive search operation was launched in the forested areas near the scene of blast.
Sources in the Khunti police told HT that three people suspected of having alleged alliance with the banned outlaw have been apprehended for questioning.
Khunti tops the list in the eight district including Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, Palamu, Chaibasa and Giridhi which have been identified by the election commission as the highly left wing extremist district out of the 23 districts in the country.
Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had alerted the state police last month about the nefarious designs to disrupt peaceful elections in Jharkhand.
According to the letter, Maoists are planning to ambush security forces, polling centers, police stations and polling parties in the state. The MHA has also warned the road opening parties (ROPs) to remain fully alert to avoid any untoward incident.
