Tashi Malik and Nungshi Malik, the twin sisters from Dehradun, scaled Carstensz Pyramid, the highest mountain in Oceania, on March 19 and unfurled the Tricolour there. Earlier, the duo also scaled the Mt Everest.
Col (retd) VK Malik, father of the twins, said that they experienced
dangerous slips and falls during their two-week long trek up and down the mountain. But their strong will to win prevailed against all odds.
"They fought against odds and emerged winners. I am happy at their achievement and hope they will conquer all seven summits safely and successfully," he told Hindustan Times.
The twins have scaled five tall mountains so far.
Their aim is to climb seven summits of the world.
The brother and sister from Pakistan, Mirza Ali and Samina Baig, who had teamed up with twins while scaling Mt Everest, also joined them this time.
One of the highest peaks of the world, Carstensz Pyramid, is situated at 4,884 mt altitude located in Indonesia's extremely remote and rugged West Papua region.
The peak is also known as the highest point between the Himalayas and the Andes, better known as 'island peak' in the world.
Like the peak, the summit was dangerous for twins.
Carstensz is a steep with razor sharp rocks.
There's absolutely no room for error. The twins had to complete Tyrolean Traverse by undertaking risky jumps over wide rock gaps and had to rapel down 80% of the mountain.
Sometimes the trek lasted into nights as valuable morning hours were lost due to the unpredictable nature of the local porters who sat in protest to demand money.
Several porters left the twins midway.
But, it did not let the spirit go away.
Despite difficult terrains and resistance from porters, the twins continued to climb and successfully scaled the peak.
The unique feature of these tropical mountains is that they are located just 4 degrees south of the equator and are one of the few places in the world where permanent ice can be seen almost directly on the equator.
About 350 people have climbed the peak of Mt. Carstensz since 192, since it was first climbed.
On the contrary, Mt. Everest was scaled 300 times alone in 2013.
Thus, it can well be ascertained how dangerous scaling Mt Carstensz is.
The twins and brother-sister duo reached the summit together and unfurled their respective national flags.
The twins will attempt to climb North America's highest peak, Mt. McKinley in the USA in mid May.
After Everest, this is one of the most challenging mountains to climb being located in the tropics with extreme weather conditions and snowstorms lasting up to weeks at a stretch. For this, twins will do intense training and preparation at either NIM Uttarkashi or at high altitude training school in Kashmir.
